Why Buy at Auction

The Smarter Way to Shop

Sustainable Style: Buying vintage is the ultimate eco-friendly choice. Give high-quality items a second life and reduce your carbon footprint.

Unbeatable Value: Acquire designer furniture and investment-grade art often for a fraction of retail gallery prices.

Transparency: No hidden surprises. We stand by our rigorous condition reports and clear terms of sale.

Auction Terminology Glossary

Absentee Bid: A bid placed in advance. You set your maximum price, and our system automatically bids for you against others, but only as much as necessary to keep you in the lead.

As-Is: A legal term meaning the item is sold in its current condition, including any faults or wear. We recommend viewing our detailed condition reports before bidding.

Buyer’s Premium: A standard percentage added to the final winning bid (Hammer Price) that goes to the auction house to cover administrative and marketing costs. Remember to factor this into your total budget.

Condition Report: A written description detailing the physical state of an item, including any damage or repairs. At Hughes, we provide honest reports so online bidders know exactly what they are buying.

Estimate: A price range (Low to High) estimating what the item might sell for based on market trends. This is a guide, not a guarantee.

Hammer Price: The final winning bid amount when the auctioneer says "Sold." This price does not yet include the Buyer’s Premium or taxes.

Reserve Price: The confidential minimum price the seller is willing to accept. If bidding does not reach this number, the item will not be sold.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How do I bid at an online estate auction?
First, create a free account on the Hughes Auctions website. Once registered, you can browse catalogs, place live bids during the event, or set a "Max Bid" in advance to let our system bid for you automatically.

What extra fees are added to the winning bid?

Like most auction houses, we charge a "Buyer’s Premium." This is a percentage added to the final hammer price to cover administrative and marketing costs. Always factor this and applicable sales tax into your bidding budget.

Do you offer shipping for furniture and art?

Yes. While we offer convenient local pickup in Los Angeles for all items, we also provide in-house global shipping or can provide you with a list of local third-party shippers.

Are auction items sold "as-is"?

Yes. All items are sold in their current condition. We provide detailed condition reports and high-resolution photos for every lot so you can bid with confidence. We encourage you to review these or contact us with questions before bidding.

What happens if I win an item?

You will receive an invoice via email immediately following the auction. You can pay securely online. Once payment is confirmed, you may schedule a pickup appointment, utilize our in-house shipping, or coordinate shipping with a local third-party company.
